What do I need in order to become a chef?


can become chef attending culinary school and/or working apprentice chef in restaurant. chefs work @ several restaurants getting experience under different mentors before choose specialty.

can training in school vocational programs, 2 year colleges or 4 year college programs. chefs , cooks may trained in apprenticeship programs offered professional culinary institutes, industry associations, , trade unions. large hotels , restaurants operate own training programs.

people have taken courses in commercial food preparation may able start in cook or chef job without having spend time in lower-skilled kitchen job.

school , curriculum varies, students spend of time learning prepare food through practice. learn bake, broil, , prepare food. learn use , care kitchen equipment. there courses in menu planning, determination of portion size, food cost control, purchasing food supplies in quantity, selection , storage of food, , how use of leftover food minimize waste. restaurant sanitation , public health rules handling food taught.

head chef direct kitchen staff, in addition preparing meals, or start his/her own restaurant. if chef able withstand high stress , pressure of job, become head chef within 10 years.
