Is it just that simple Push the reset button and no more problems?

electric water heater not heating water started making loud popping noises , water extremely hot notice water getting cold night after , lights dimming , flicker moment after got out of the shower , today no hot water ,some i'm trouble shooting on internet , manual dug best guess high temperature shut off ,but don't want without knowing why shut off ,i hate reset , week later house on fire wondering reasons cause shut off 1 of things happens time time safe reset , forget or should worried under laying causes hope i'm making sense
