Where do trout normally stay in a river.?

hang out (a) don't have work hard hold position (that is, not in strongest current), (b) food come by, , (c) aren't exposed danger.

in areas strong current can find them behind largish rocks, means don't have swim hard stay put, small bugs , bits of food come down towards them, , rock adds shade on 1 side, , causes ripples on surface, helps hide them.

spot @ top end of pool -- cast lure white water of riffle above pool, retrieve downstream pool, , fish waiting in slower water it.

when they're not actively feeding they'll hang out in still water deep pools or under bank or under fallen logs. problem is, it's harder them bite when they're not actively feeding.

don't need deep water -- i've caught lots of trout in less foot of water.
