What are the difference between bananas and platains?

plantains are:
starchy
used vegetable
longer bananas
thicker skin bananas
resemble green bananas, may green, yellow or black

bananas are:
sweet
eaten fruit
shorter plantains
thinner skin plantains
color green when not ripe, yellow when ripe

i'm getting dominican cooking, , use "platanos" people use platains. what's difference between ripe, , not ripe platains? can find platains? , difference?
