What does Overdrive really do to a car to get it to "overdrive"?

term "overdrive" describes gear ratios of transmission. in old days, top gear in automobile's transmission direct drive. when in direct drive, if engine turning @ 2000 rpm, output shaft on transmission turning @ same speed , on wheels move car down road.

overdrive added reduce engine's speed when overdrive engaged, engine turn @ 1500 rpm while transmission output shaft still turns @ 2000. allows car continue @ same speed engine turning slower , using less fuel.

in modern cars , light trucks, "overdrive" top gear ratio in transmission.
