I how improve eyesight?

have bad eyesight. if took out contacts wouldn't able read the numbers on license plate 3 feet away. it's genetic, , don't want mom when grow (she has absolutely horrible vision). there way improve vision? or @ least stop getting worse or slow down? may someday laser eye surgery, how work? hate having bad eyes. (yeah, know people have worse , i'm lucky able see @ , blah blah blah.) please help
