5 grand can decent setup, have decide what, if anything, you're going specialize in. fashion? action? landscape? wedding? advertising? have big influence on choose. should research various fields of photography , see people in fields use. instance, wedding shooters use canon's 5d 2 or 3. sports shooters use nikon d3, d3s or d4 or canon 1ds line. no 1 camera can everything, although can close.

i'd keep price under $5,000 since i'm getting student loan , need software, additional lenses, props, computer etc :]
