Setting up HD TV for the first time.?

went out today , bought philips 32" lcd tv. never had hd tv before, , want know how set up. have hd top box verizon fios already. bought hdmi cable tv. hooked , picture clear, although not clear expected. asked friend , said composite cables separate audio wire. right using red, yellow, , white wire. getting composite cable make picture clearer? audio cable should get? appreciated.
