Why has my male turtle started biting my female?

few days ago noticed male box turtle has been biting , chewing @ of shell point of causing bleed. seperated them.they have been in same tank on 2 years now. why start of sudden? i`m little worried female because sits on over docking station , hasn`t been going water , don`t think she`s been eating either. have advice?
