I'm afraid of our heater giving off carbon monoxide again?

family , live in old apartment and, naturally, use heater in winter. last time used however, detectors on walls sounded alarm, sensing carbon monoxide. heater on right , sincerely afraid giving off carbon monoxide. dangerous? should turn off? please me, i'm scared. parents keep insisting it's dust burning isn't if detectors sounded.
