darwin: natural selection gradual, non-random process biological traits become either more or less common in population. basically, desirable traits (beneficial traits) have better chance of attracting mates , creating offspring. less desirable traits attact fewer mates. because of this, attractive traits continue within species , non attractive traits fade away. natural selection accepted scientific community.

lamarckism idea organism can pass on characteristics acquired during lifetime offspring. idea not accepted within scientifc community.
