Should you sing through the throat or diaphragm?

i'm learning how sing. however, i'm little confused this. went 2 different vocal trainers. 1 of them said should sing through diaphragm because less damaging on vocal chords. other 1 told me should sing through throat. i'm not sure 1 right.
