If you own a 720p Plasma TV, should you only play 720p movies, or will 1080p/i be the same as a 720?

wondering when purchasing blu-rays, if should 1080 or 720 make picture way should be.
example: go out , buy new blu-ray, 1080, bring home , watch it, of course plasma 720, making picture worse filling in? if buy in 720 instead, give me better overall quality?
or
buying either difference not noticeable?

info on subject, trying make sure not screwing myself out of picture quality , trying learn in process.
