Putting up crown molding at the ceiling that will be stained, do I really need to put a finish on it?

i'm happy "stained only" of dark oak. concerned other issues might missing not putting finish coat on might cause. drying out of wood separation of joints consider - side not stained or sealed way, wouldn't moulding dry out same anyway? wondered if oil base stain, i'm using, dry adequately not attract dust accumulation on years.

since molding @ ceiling height , never in contact or anything, need have finish coat applied?
