Railway tracks - whats all the small stones for, do they lay the track ontop of them.?

lay track on top of them because want ground hard , strong, level. when rains ground gets muddy, , 1 million pound train make tracks sink, , trains go on lot, derailment can occur. water seep through gravel (rocks) , not affect train or tracks.

reason want tracks few feet off ground because if flooding ( or other disasters affect track/train ) occurs want tracks , train not affected. in local park, flash flood occurred , entire ground flooded, tracks in park not affected , had trains come through.

, last, yet main reason build tracks on gravel because want tracks level, or straight.
