What is the difference between playing on a keyboard and a piano?

many of piano students have lesson on piano, practice @ home on keyboard. parents don't want invest in piano until see child interested enough continue. sometimes, grades, piano note required outside octaves of keyboard, though can choose piece fits within octaves. if keyboard not touch sensitive, have difficulty in mastering varying levels of touch louder or softer passages. if touch sensitive, better still not quite same on piano. , of course keyboard doesn't have pedals. nevertheless, i'd go ahead , start. keyboard has notes in right places enable practice, , if happy achievements, can progress piano in couple of years.

i start piano lessons soon, own keyboard. practicing @ home on keyboard affect piano-playing. there other difference between them other keyboard produces more electric sound?
