because stock market big, it's hard keep track of overall performance, use indexes: collections of various stocks give idea of how stock market doing overall. dow jones industrial average 1 of these. consists of 30 stocks, large companies microsoft, coke, intel. on tv when dow or down means has taken average of these companies performance period. knowing how dow, , other indexes doing, helps investors know how market doing in general.

what meant dow jones down? dow jones? saw ppl on tv talking, i'm curious.
