In chemistry, what is it called when an answer is ends with ' # x 10^#' (ex. 2.7 x 10^4)?

that's called "scientific notation". "x 10^##" indicates decimal point goes. numeric portion have 1 non-zero digit left of decimal point.

convert scientific notation regular numbers, shift decimal point based on exponent. shift right positive, left negative:

here 2 examples:

1.23 x 10^2

shift decimal point 2 places right:

1.23 x 10^2 = 123

1.23 x 10^-2

shift decimal point 2 places left:

1.23 x 10^-2 = 0.0123

convert ordinary numbers scientific notation, reverse process counting number of shifts needed 1 non-zero digit left of decimal point:

12345

shift decimal point 4 places left , put 4 in exponent:

12345 = 1.2345 x 10^4

0.000456

shift decimal point 4 places right , put -4 in exponent:

0.000456 = 4.56 x 10^-4

i see these time , don't know call them.
please tell me how 1 convert actual number this?
