How much of a language is it wise to know before visiting the country?

hi!

want see austrian/ german alps , spend couple of months exploring. want learn german whilst i'm there, i've heard best way learn language become immersed in it.

question is, standard should german before going? presumably it's wise know @ least few key words? @ moment know nothing.
