Things to do in Chicago?

i'm heading chicago few days in december (around 20th) , wondering if people recommend things do, places visit (and cheap good/safe places stay) , things see? i'll myself (and female, feeling safe plus me). weather in december? information in general , how around great! haven't done travelling myself before , it's daunting! guys :)
thinking of staying in chicago getaway hostel (in west arlington) thoughts? if not place, there anywhere closer downtown relatively cheap? hostel or motel maybe? , information have great! easy 10 points :)
