Files to big to move to external hard drive?

external hard drive has 49.0 gb free has lot off stuff on it. want move 3 video clips total of 16.83 gb. surely there plenty of space it. external set fat 32 , i'm sure needs else , needs re-formatted or won't delete on external? including old , files can't replaced? should wait till christmas , separate external hard drive avoid problem?
