Why is wife of prince william called duches of cambridge and not princess of cambridge?

because cambridge duchy , not principality. duchess, "princess william of wales", taking female form of courtesy title of husband son of prince of wales.


long answer:

daughter of royal couple called courtesy "princess of cambridge". e.g. if named jane be:

princess jane of cambridge

not

princess of cambridge, since said above, imply existence of "principality of cambridge".

duchess of cambridge princess of united kingdom (by marriage). however, category not title. see table in link below.

why prince given title duke of cambridge , not prince of cambridge?
