Can an optical drive be used instead of a hard drive?

can boot off optical drive (obviously, because that's how oss installed), , can rewritable optical media, theoretically suppose could. impractical not worth reckon.
you'd have around dilemma of writing data disc running os off. problem don't think optical drives can read , write intermittently hdds do. , if couldn't read , write it, isn't functioning hdd it?

usb flash drives can used hard drives these days. better idea.

this purely theoretical question. don't see use in doing this, cds , dvds not traditional hard drives. had random thought , wondered if, should crazy computer builder want so, optical drive cd/dvd used in lieu of hard drive.
