Why is oxygen a non metal?

metal requires 4 attributes.

1)malleability: element solid has able shaped. how people shape metal in blacksmith

2)luster: has have sort of shine in elemental form.

3) high electrical conductivity

4)readily losses electrons

ultimately, these have size of outer shell compared size of nucleus. of these traits come known "sea of electrons": basically, outermost electron shell far away nucleus, doesn't take hardly force metal atom loose outer electrons.

in fact, electrons readily jumping atom atom continually, in sort of same way picture water kind of floating around randomly.

anyway, oxygen, nucleus big enough electrons @ p orbital feel attached oxygen.

tl;dr have properties of metal electrons have loosely attached nucleus, oxygen has stinger pull on electrons metals do.
