Going on a cruise into Ensenada...do we carry our actual passport or can we carry copies?

on cruise, need real passport. in port of call, many people not feel comfortable taking passport them fear of being stolen, , leave passport in cabin , take copy ashore, , possibly driver's license in case official id needed port area.
however, if goes wrong , ship leaves without you, copy of passport not going on plane next port, or home. make getting replacement passport easier.

does know requirements are?
