I'm refurbing (Stripping and redoing somehow) my old rifle stock. The problem is...?

stocks "plain grain" should more stable stocks "wild" grain going every way.
that's reason chosen rifle stocks.

recommend using quality finish , if want "dress up" checkering tools , practice on piece of wood find pattern add checkering.

can @ "high dollar" stocks pattern , notice wood "plain".
