Why in 2012 Beijing airport is still ''PEK'',named after old name ''Peking''?

original code airport pek based on english transliteration of city's name: peking. prc began using pinyin @ time aiport constructed in 1958, revising peking's name beijing @ later date. however, international community did not adopt pinyin standard until decades later. so, when airport built code pek used international air transport association (which had been in existence since 1945) in alignment prc's own english name city. once code in place iata, it's not easy change it, except in cases when new, additional facilities city built.
