New home with built in speakers. What specs do I look at for AV receiver to ensure all speakers can be used?

have 6 total surround sound speakers, 5 speakers installed in living room ceiling front left & right ,center, rear left & right, , 1 on patio. how know how many speakers receiver can handle (besides looking on holes)? there in specs indicates it? went best buy last night , of them didn't have enough , i'd rather online have more choose from.
