I'm autistic but could I still?
hi,
of course take driver's test. don't let disability take on life , define are. many people "high functioning autism" drive. other answerer said, autism ranges high functioning (mild) severly intellectually disabled (not being able function @ all). high functioning autistic. 50% of people autism can't function enough (which means can't live on own, barely able dress themselves, , require lot of support rest of lives). high functioning autism (being able dress yourself, try drive , attend college), definatly not impossible approach to. have 16 year old cousin aspergers syndrome (high functioning autism) , drives car , works part-time, while attending high school. didn't let take on life. believe harder person autism spectrum disorder approach driving because of sensory issues deal with. it's definatly not impossible person high functioning autism drive. here tips , advice on autistic individuals driving:
think more suitable if driving instructor informed aspergers beforehand , learns how communicate (tell him communication method works best you). instructor should more patient nt's when reversing, signaling, or performing maneuvers pass on highway, example.
aspergers doesn't limit person's ability drive in every case. ability drive safely must judged on individual basis. people aspergers should follow basic guidelines though:
1. assemble group of professionals such parents, school psychologist, driver’s education instructor , others discuss whether or not capable of driving car. assess visual/motor tasks, how distracted, , overall motor skills.
2. apply driving license @ normal legal age, sure put down aspergers on application @ dmv. it's against law not declare on application, won't disqualify getting license.
3. take driving lessons driver’s education instructor, double amount of physical driving practice used reacting normal driving situations. also, bring information can instructor adapt strategies understand better. take frequent breaks during time, ask information broken down small sections, , ask instructor use physical cues estimating speed , distance.
4. continue practice familiar make more comfortable . simulate situations in empty parking lot require avoidance steering, emergency breaking , distractions loud music, water on windshield , pedestrians until comfortable.
5. drive along familiar routes possible. new routes , not knowing going can distracting , upsetting.
6. remain calm when other drivers break rules of road , ready when do. people aspergers tend follow rules of road , signs concretely – fault. anticipate actions of other cars observing behavior – again, important thing pay attention other cars.
luck everything! sorry wrote much. :)
