Are you slightly related to everyone with rhe same surname as you?
no, , there many reasons why people have same surnames.
in cultures, many people adopt names of local warlord or chieftain show loyalty, warriors. common in europe, in ireland. on generations led names dominating more others kings came , went.
also, alot of surnames come fathers first name. if alot of people had name richard, sons have surname richardson. alot of scottish people had name first donald, sons became macdonald. not these people related, because not related people cos had same first name.;)
surnames come peoples jobs, such smith (like blacksmith ect..) , in german spelled schmidt, when german immigrants came new world, might have considered changing spelling of name fit in, schmidt became smith prevent possible discrimination.
it's worth noting slaves adopted surnames of masters. i'm not taking african slaves either, slavery common on world long before europeans got africa. french person's ancestor could've been slave.
not close 20th cousins or something
