Why does my bird randomly act scared of me?

ok, here's what's happening: cockatiel fine being handled. game tamed him myself. i've ha hi few months, , he's become used , enjoys perching on fingers , being "petted". other day when came home school, asked him step up, , acted nervous of hand, running around in cage , not stepping up, when first got him. left him alone, figuring scared him. when went later, fine. same thing has happened few times now. can't think of links episodes each other. thoughts?
