Is it possible that Japan will sink when the next big earthquake hits?

no.. it's not possible of japan sink although areas experience liquefaction , cause buildings or other structures sink ground not stable if not anchored in ground bedrock. 2011 japan quake liquefaction effects more pronounced expected more studies need done on how produced , endure during large , long duration quakes. rocky areas of japan not affected liquefaction...just areas soil uncompacted such reclaimed land or near ground water sources.

liquefaction occurs during earthquakes jumbles or reorganizes loose, uncompacted soils , can cause objects/buildings sink or objects pipes or storage tanks, etc..buried in ground rise up. or can sand boils or water squeezed ground in areas if water table near surface. not cause entire country or land mass sink.
