Why do they say airplanes fly a great circle...isn't it straight?

great circle shortest distance between 2 points, , can little confusing because people used looking @ flat map. if had fly ny moscow russia, direction fly? if @ flat map, might east or west (depending on layout of map) in fact shortest distance fly northward coming close north pole direction plane fly.

on flat map path may looked curved in fact, plane flying in straight line.

i'm wondering.:)
