Survival equipment condition?

have gotten interested in survival skills , survival preparation. have self assembled own survival backpack brand new survival items. of course want test survival skills along equipment. problem is, don't have budget test items in survival bag, buy new ones. wondering if okay practice items need (knives,fire starters,hatchets,tools,bowls,etc.) , put them , use survival equipment, or should have brand new items in bag performance , durability purposes? thanks!
