If a tombstone is marked col. that would imply he served as a colonel in the military?

"col." on grave marker military rank of deceased.

in states there is/was honorific title of "colonel" did not mean person served colonel in military.

need conduct research on person buried grave marker "col." on it, determine if served in military - or perhaps person served during war between states in confederate army.

if wish add person's name , years of birth , death (if know them) , location of burial, perhaps or answers in y!a genealogy can find more information on individual or direct sources of information. note: can edit question , add additional details.
