Cheap place to stay that won't be too far of a drive to upper east side manhattan?

i've been in situation several time, couple of times involving out-patient surgery.. have choices - -

can stay in city. stayed @ holiday inn on w.l 57th street. it's clean , if luck, have reasonably priced rooms. there, have option of either taking subway or taxi appointment. if having surgery, want avoid subway, @ least post-surgery.

doctor seeing @ columbia presbyterian/harkness eye center on upper west side, stayed across river in new jersey couple of times. in 1 case, timing such more convenient drive own car.. other instance involved surgery , couldn't drive, trip relied on taxis or 'car service'.

planning trips, 1 of nurses in local doctor's office nyc native tried offer other options, including staying in bronx. there hotels not far yankee stadium reasonable.

issue transportation in city - subway fast , convenient, not idea take subway after surgery. getting taxi easy if in mid-town manhattan, if in more remote areas, can challenge. when had surgery, hospital arranged 'car'. price of car same price of taxi

i have go visit doctor in upper east side of manhattan right next central park. have never been nyc. need know not more 15 or 20 minute commute area modest priced hotel or motel. have recommendations?
