What are some Weird/Unique/Unknown Night Spots in Los Angeles?

visiting l.a. in few weeks , looking out-of-this-world unique things @ night. don't plan on doing hollywood tourist thing in slightest. want weird, unique, , underground activities/places/events visit in evening. awesome if places unknown mainstream public. want avoid "seen it, been there, done that, else?" scenarios.

figured best way find these places through word-of-mouth people know weird/underground/unknown l.a. found out place called lucha vavoom seems interesting because hosts both drag shows , lucha libre. know model wrestling underground thing in nyc, wonder if have in l.a., too. crazy , blog-worthy, bar fire-dancers , bar tender serving flame shots every night, late night museum events, night time street fairs, night-time cultural events cup of tea well. heck, i'd welcome restaurants serve bugs on menu (and yes, i've heard of typhoon, means need else new , unknown).

friend of mine told me unique event occurred in san francisco called lost horizon night market, word-of-mouth participatory event featuring series of box trucks parked along street stretching several of blocks, each truck has unique theme revealed once part curtains , enter truck. told way find out location of event invited 1 of truck’s proprietors. of truck themes included smash truck, noodle truck, andy warhol truck, bass truck, campfire truck, cuddle truck, black light truck, hot tub truck (tapping water city fire hydrant) , many other creatively themed trucks. awesome , cool welcome!

i'm being specific because need away mainstream-tourist los angeles week , it's hard think outside box events , places when research trampled on google's mainstream paid-for website listings. rather support artistic unknown hole-in-the-wall places , events during visit. if stretches out areas past los angeles, i'd fine (no more hour , half drive away downtown la, though). if can me make la experience 1 remember (hangover , all), grateful.
