Best place to stay in Singapore / Malaysia / genting.?

i'm on family trip singapore 4 days , malaysia 4 days. i'm traveling on own, without tour operator.
can suggest decent area stay in both sing & malaysia ..accessible of tourist spots, closer shopping market... walkable metro station ...etc
remember suggested stay in tsim sha tsui when did hongkong trip .i quite happy stay @ nathan hotel on nathan street. please suggest similar.
