Is it true that kings in medieval Germany were ELECTED by popular vote?


holy roman empire in theory elective monarchy, 15th century onwards electors merely formalised dynastic succession within austrian house of habsburg, title passing eldest surviving son of deceased emperor. despite this, office not legally hereditary, , heir not title himself "emperor" without having been elected.
