I have a 54 plate Ford Focus St170 that has been driving fine for the past year.?

thing bought 1 of hand held diagnostic tools ebay use on dads car having problems but, thought ive got why not try on focus ! trouble starts. showed fault code p1381 there no engine light showing. acting on decided take speedometer out , check engine light bulb , there wasn't 1 ! put 1 in, put started engine , light came on. took car local ford dealership full diagnostic @ cost of £48. told me needed 2 new parts , cam stripping down @ cost of £700. politely told them id see if done cheaper elsewhere. when went collect car, started , spluttering , idling above 2000 rpm. went inside , explained them , told me when brought in ! argued them saying had driven fine year until messed , wanted car how before took there. said have did not tell me if have pay not want feel whatever has happened car down them. can give me advice on next please ?
