Why does aluminium have a higher melting point than magnesium?
when substance melts, of attractive forces holding particles broken or loosened particles can move freely around each other still close together. stronger these forces are, more energy needed overcome them , higher melting temperature.
sodium , aluminium metals. have metallic bonding, in positive metal ions attracted delocalised electrons. going sodium aluminium:
charge on metal ions increases +1 +2
sodium loses electron become positively charged +1
magnesium loses 2 electron become positively charged +2
result ,
number of delocalised electrons increases
strength of metallic bonding increases ,
melting points , boiling points increase
