How do I sand/polish a travertine table?

have large (4'x8') travertine table handed down me. table quite old want polish , give nice shine. have read sanding using 600,800,1000, , 1200 grit sandpaper way go, still unclear on how go this. should sand wet or dry? should use sealant after? have orbital sander, work? appreciated.
