Did hardware stores carry battery testers (or something like that) 40 years ago?

35-40 years ago, when small, remember putting finger in device thought (and may have been) battery tester. @ hardware or auto parts store, think. part had lots of electonics , thought testing smaller batteries, 7 probably, knows? thanks.

when put finger battery presumably went , turned knob, shock. tried friend put finger in. showed him needed putting finger in second, , turned knob immediately, shocking me again. have been battery tester of sort? after doing little internet research, looks might have been tube tester. possible? idea testing device might have been playing around with, stupidly? thanks.
