How does RAM work? (Random access Memory)?

ram not hold data. temporary cache needed cpu , gpu (central processor unit , graphics processor unit). more processes , windows , software run, more of cache storage need. typically windows , system processes can use 4gb. windows 7 might run slowdowns on 1gb, can operate on 2gb, run best @ 4gb. graphics has own ram, may use 2gb, typically 6gb sufficient. if doing complex processing cad or video editing, more desirable. when have several windows open in parallel processing, , anti-virus running, , firewall, , maybe adobe or other software on quickstart or checking updates, these processes using ram holding bin data cpu , gpu. windows starts , shuts down faster more ram.

more better, go higher amounts gets used. since price of ddr3 ram dropped, 8gb not expensive , when building own desktop pc, 2x4gb standard.

now, motherboards dual channel. means ram runs better in pairs. many laptops , desktop pcs today come single 4gb stick because little cheaper. means advantage buy matching stick.

speed, in mhz, common new type 1600 mhz. faster ram better graphics can handle , perform better higher speed ram. but, cpu memory controller works within range. usually, faster ram slowed cpu need, if ram fast cpu, unstable , system has severe performance issues. though motherboard can handle faster ram, doesn't mean cpu compatible it. sign has been tested, there no guarantees.

"memory controller supports ddr3-1333 , ddr3-1600 memory". 1600 speed therefore preferred, , 1333 speed ok, , maybe 1866 cpu slow 1600 anyway, going higher speed not best thing do. there voltage involved, , lower voltage better. so, ideal gaming system have i5-3570k cpu, , 2x4gb 1600mhz 1.5v ram heat spreaders in desktop pc, , people mention g.skill ripjaws , corsair vengence best, though in reality brand not important because ics on stick same basic manufactures of samsung, winbond, micron, or couple of others.
