Is it safe/ advisable for a 19 year old American boy to travel to Turkey by himself?

sure safe long as,

- don't trust (especially money matters), little careful, search , gather info city , make plan according

mean things should consider anywhere in world plan travel to.

apart that,

istanbul being visited millions of tourists on world, of different nationalities including yours, american.

feel comfortable being american. turkish people friendly , hospitable , has no problem americans or others.

safe in terms of political conjonctural case, if little bit worried when see or read news countries around turkey. (no conflicts, fights or related safety problems in arab neighbors)

istanbul great idea american, if focus xmas-new year period first (by question of yours here), recommendation, you'd better spend week in london, paris etc.

visit istanbul in spring if can.
