How do commentators know the routine of a figure skating program before hand?
there number of ways:
1) skater submits planned program sheet, technical specialists use in calling program.
2) announcers former skaters, can recognize setup , execution of elements.
3) skaters typically perform same routines entire season, it's been seen before.
4) media , spectators have access practice sessions, watch beforehand.
5) except live broadcasts, announcers' commentary added after actual skating over; lets announcer watch , make notes before being recorded.
after event, isu posts judges scoring results, shows elements in detail. it's interesting read through , see why results came out way did: can see jumps downgraded because of underrotation, edge calls on lutzes flutzed, , 10% bonus jumps done towards end of program.

peter carruthers gets flustered when calls element in advance , skater doesn't what's on cheat sheet. can imagine him checking sheets/teleprompter make sure he's reading right place. tara lipinski has been doing excellent job of announcing , understands ijs scoring implications. example, skater supposed triple flip-double toe jump @ french grand prix last weekend. did triple flip, later added double toe jump combination successfully. lipinski recognized switch , called immediately, pointing out how let skater (some of) lost points thinking on feet. great added information.
russian tv commentary different us, it's more golf announcing hushed tones , minimal remarks during program. talk storm before/after skating, can enjoy program , music moreso announcers. (lipinski , tanith belbin both @ keeping comments minimum.)
wish, however, nbc use sap let viewers listen program music without announcers. it's different experience.
do skaters announce do?
