How do you determine the waterline, in metric units, of a body of mass placed in water?

i've read question on boat building , how weight canoe can carry. biggest challenge units in these measured. there way these can related cubic meters? question have follows:
container of steel has mass of 50 tonnes , volume of 408,78 cubic meters (it 3m high). if placed in fresh water empty container, how far waterline top?

have calculated volume of water displaced 50 000 cubic meters, don't understand how waterline comes play.
