more details: flat panel tvs use panel made of liquid crystals; hence name lcd (liquid crystal display). lcd not active, in not emit light. there on panel lots , lots of small pixels can block out/transmit light of shade. create image particular pattern of pixels turned 1 way or other. need light source flow through these pixels; , provided fluorescent tubes in call lcd tvs. fluorescent light has disadvantages - power, display evenness etc. created new technology light provided leds; , these call led tv. panel still lcd. leds occupy less space, consume less power, supposedly can produce more lighting; hence see led tvs thinner , smaller. , marketed premium because of plus supposed superior image quality.
