How can i work out which chord to play on a guitar?
let's @ why c chord played on frets 1, 3 , 8. call 0, 3 , 8 think know mean.
there indeed formula every chord. take 1st, 3rd, , 5th note in major scale form major chord (1-3-5) . flat third note make minor.(1-3b-5) add flatted 7th note make seventh chord.(1-3-5-7b) there similar formulas every chord , can google these. when play chord on 6 stringed guitar, contain notes in formula....some notes may doubled , order can scrambled chord contain 3 or 4 notes in formula.
c major scale easy: c-d-e-f-g-a-b-c first note c, third e , 5th g. open c chord on fret 0 c because contains notes c-e-g. other positions still contain 3 notes, don't need make blueprint of neck find them. there's simpler way.
c on 3rd fret shaped chord formed above barre on 3rd fret. (3-3-5-5-5-3) visualize chord, , move neck (using barre) count notes.
fret 0 =
fret 1 = a# / bb
fret 2 = b
fret 3 = c
fret 4 = c# / db
fret 6 = d

understand c chord on 8th fret, same principle except you're barring e shaped chord. if start counting @ open e , follow notes on e string, you'll find 8th fret turns out c.
theoretically can chord. shapes more practical barre others, don't have play 6 strings...only 3 or 4 notes in formula. instance, can form open d chord , play 3 high strings. slide chord neck, name of chord changes....d-d#-e-f-f#-g...etc.
