Why doesn't the Breeders Cup get a crowd of 165,000 like the Kentucky Derby?
think it's combination of factors. 1 derby best known race in north america. longest continuously held sporting event in america. has heard of , seen on television. mainstream media covers derby. it's on lot of people's bucket lists, , appeals non-horsy people. it's rich tradition, , early-may weather great. people racing can watch great card, while people want "experience" can @ clothes, hats, , celebrities.
, let's face it, substantial number of derby-goers aren't there races, party. suspect post time, half infield isn't aware racing going on. speaking of infield, derby couldn't attract big crowd if infield weren't open. there wouldn't room. infield adds lot of capacity.
breeders' cup races, otoh, appeal folks follow horse racing. people have never heard of them. there's no great tradition associated bc, , november not time of year when john , jane q. public thinking horse racing, if ever do. there isn't lot of tv coverage, , not gets nbc sports channel.
price isn't issue, don't think. except infield, comparable seating @ breeders' cup cheaper both oaks , derby.
i think breeder's cup classic 1 of best , exciting races in united states.
